What Are the Benefits of an Elevated Toilet Seat?

Let’s be real for a minute: no one loves talking about toilets, but if sitting down and standing back up is getting harder, it is a conversation worth having. Whether you are recovering from surgery, dealing with limited mobility, or just planning ahead, an elevated toilet seat can make a huge difference in daily comfort and safety. There are different types to choose from based on your needs and setup. If you are in the Milwaukee area, GreenLight Mobility is here to walk you through all of it.

An elevated toilet seat is a device that adds a few in inches of height to your existing toilet, making it easier to sit down and stand up without straining your knees, hips, or back. It is one of those simple home modifications that can really boost independence and reduce the risk of falls in the bathroom.

There are a few different options available when it comes to elevated toilet seats:

  • Clip-On or Lock-On Raised Seats

These are removable seats that sit right on top of your existing toilet seat (or replace it altogether). Most models lock in place with adjustable clamps or brackets to stay secure while in use. These are great if you are looking for temporary use, such as recovery after surgery and are easy to clean.

  • Toilet Seat Risers

These go underneath your existing toilet seat while still letting you keep your regular seat and lid. They blend in a bit more than clip-ons. This way you are able to keep the look and seat that your current toilet has and it is more discreet than the clip-on seats.

  • Elevated Seats with Handles

An elevated toilet with handles includes armrests or grab bars that are already built in and provide added support while lowering or raising yourself. They often come as one sturdy unit that sits securely on top of your toilet. These are especially helpful for someone with balance issues or weak leg or core strength.

  • Comfort Height Toilet

Sometimes the best option is to replace the toilet altogether with a taller one. This type of toilet is called a comfort height toilet or an ADA compliant toilet. A standard toilet is an average of 15 inches in height. Comfort height toilets are 17 – 19 inches high which means there is no need to install a different type of seat or riser. This is great for someone who is looking for a permanent option.
